O’Brien congratulates volunteers for keeping Sunshine Coast show alive

Federal Member for Fairfax Ted O’Brien MP has welcomed the return of the Sunshine Coast Agricultural Show from June 11-13, after last year’s event was cancelled.
“The Sunshine Coast Agricultural Show is back, and that’s great news for everyone from Nambour throughout the hinterland, to Maroochydore, Coolum and beyond,” said Mr O’Brien.
“This weekend up to 25,000 thousand people will pour through the Showground gates in Nambour to get their overdue fix of the Show.”
Like so many shows across the country, COVID-19 closed down the Sunshine Coast Agricultural Show in 2020.
If the Federal Government had not stepped-in with a helping hand, this Australian institution could have become another COVID-19 victim
“You only truly appreciate the real importance of local shows if you’re from regional or rural Australia,” Mr O’Brien said in a speech to the Australian Parliament last week.
“For many communities the Show is the biggest event of the year.
“Local farmers vie for bragging-rights, others unlock secret family recipes to win baking prizes.
“And what Australian child will ever forget their first show? Those head-spinning rides; side-show alley; the sights, sounds and smells; then, heading home clutching a fist full of showbags.”
Mr O’Brien explained that’s why the Government acted quickly to help protect show societies.
With Mr O’Brien’s assistance the Sunshine Coast Agricultural Show Society received $70,000 of Federal funding.
“I urge all residents of the Sunshine Coast to head to the Showgrounds in Nambour this weekend, and show their support for the show,” Mr O’Brien said.
“Sometimes it takes the threat of losing something to realise how much it means to you.
“So, let’s show our appreciation for all the hard-working members of the Sunshine Coast Agricultural Show Society, their staff and volunteers, for sticking in there and keeping the show alive.
The Federal Government also contributed $100,000 to help install a new passenger lift in the Showground’s Main Pavilion, improving access to people with mobility issues.
When you come to the Show this weekend, make sure you stop by Ted’s stand and pick up your free showbag, which is packed full of goodies and useful information for all the family.
Ted O’Brien will officially open the Sunshine Coast Agricultural Show this Friday at 5pm.
